New Olympic Dates Revealed

The new dates for the Tokyo Olympics have been revealed, with the games to begin on July 23 2021 and conclude on August 8 2021.

The 2020 Olympics were postponed due to the global outbreak of COVID-19, meaning the debut of 3×3 basketball on an Olympic stage will need to wait another year.

The key reasoning behind the new dates include:

1. To protect the health of the athletes and everyone involved, and to support the containment of the COVID-19 virus.

2. To safeguard the interests of the athletes and of Olympic sport.

3. The global international sports calendar.

The Australian women’s national team remain a chance to qualify for 3×3 basketball at the 2021 Olympics. They were scheduled to take part in a FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in March, but that event has been postponed, with no new dates revealed. Australia will need to finish in the top three of that tournament to punch their ticket to Tokyo.
