Gangurrus claim Gold in Glasgow

Marena Whittle starred with 15 points in the Gold Medal Game as the Australian Gangurrus went through undefeated to win gold in the 3×3 tournament at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 3×3 tournament at the 2026 Commonwealth Games wrapped up on Wednesday night Glasgow time firstly with the Gangurrus beating Jamaica 21-8 in the semi finals and then completing the gold medal triumph with the 21-11 win against Uganda on the back of Whittle’s 15 points with Emma Clarke unable to play both games.

Meanwhile, the Australian men ended up winning silver while the wheelchair men also won gold and the wheelchair women claimed bronze meaning all four Australian teams in the tournament came away with a medal.

The final day’s action at the 3×3 tournament in Glasgow got underway with the semi finals and that saw Australia putting their undefeated record on the line against Jamaica in the women’s competition.

The two teams had met during the preliminary stage with the Gangurrus winning 21-13 and then with a spot in the Gold Medal Game on the line, Australia made a scorching start scoring the opening 10 points including three successive two-pointers to Amy Atwell.

From there, the Gangurrus would end up leading 13-1 and 17-4 before completing the 21-8 victory on a two-pointer from Marena Whittle to lock in their spot in the Gold Medal Game.

By the end of the semi-final, Atwell finished with 13 points on 5/10 shooting from the outside ahead of returning home for her NBL1 West finals series with the Rockingham Flames and then joining the UC Capitals in the WNBL.

Whittle also ended up with six points and four rebounds, and Lara McSpadden two points and two blocks who also has an NBL1 South finals campaign to look ahead to at Keilor Thunder.

That led into the Gold Medal match up against Uganda who Australia had defeated 21-9 in the last game of the preliminary stage.

It was another flying start from the Gangurrus this time leading 5-1 including an early two-pointer from Whittle before she landed another from the outside to make it an 8-4 advantage.

Uganda did make a contest of it by drawing back within three with 3:30 to play but Whittle responded with another two-pointer before Atwell landed another and Whittle hit another to make it a 19-10 lead.

Australia then completed the gold medal performance with the 21-11 win with Whittle fittingly hitting the winner with just under a minute to play to finish with 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists with 10/14 shooting overall and 5/8 from the outside.

McSpadden also ended up with four points, three rebounds and a block, and Atwell two points, a rebound and an assist.

Meanwhile in the men’s 3×3 tournament, Australia also went through undefeated into the Gold Medal Game but it wasn’t quite to be with England winning 19-17 despite 12 points for the Gangurrus from Jonah Antonio with 3/6 outside shooting.

As for the women’s wheelchair team, Australia claimed bronze with the 19-17 win against Canada having earlier lost the semi-final to Scotland 15-12.

In the Bronze Medal Game, Georgia Munro-Cook wrapped up her dominant tournament with another 12 points, four rebounds and three assists with 12/17 shooting.

The men’s wheelchair team won gold for Australia with the Wombats prevailing 19-13 against England having earlier defeated Scotland 19-12 in the semi finals.

In the Gold Medal Game, Eithen Leard had 10 points and three rebounds with Tom O’Neill-Thorne adding five points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Tomas Klein three points and two boards.
